Today is RNLI SOS Day, the day when the Royal National Lifeboat Institution has its annual fund-raising push. I am sure everyone knows there is an RNLI Station on Central Promenade, just below the Tower. First established in 1864, the new station was opened back in 1998. Over those intervening 143 years, countless lives have been saved from people swept out to sea in storms to fishermen caught out at sea and much more. Amongst the recent rescue efforts the crew were involved with was the tragic helicopter crash in Morecambe Bay earlier this month.

There is a shop and exhibition/tour, although it is shut at the moment, so if you have passed by many times without ever going in, make sure you go down there on March 3rd or shortly after and take a look around.

In the meantime, why not think about donating to the RNLI. You can go down to the station itself and put some money in the collection box in the wall, give online at www.rnli.org or ring their donation hotline on 0845 121 4999. The RNLI's motto for the Day is "Train one, save many" which just about sums up what is a very worthy cause.
