Why oh why ...

Today's proposals from the Qualifications & Curriculum Authority - backed by Education Secretary Alan Johnson - I find deeply depressing. The aim is to make the school timetable more flexible, with more 'new issues' covered. Today's proposals from the Qualifications & Curriculum Authority - backed by Education Secretary Alan Johnson - I find deeply depressing. The aim is to make the school timetable more flexible, with more 'new issues' covered. Mick Waters, their director, says he wants the new curriculum to promote citizenship skills such as "an ability to tolerate difference" and a "capacity to cope with change". Worthwhile aspirations, certainly, but in focusing on the modish concerns of the day we risk los

Enhancing Cleveleys

I was in Cleveleys the other day visiting the new-ish Vue cinema with local councillors Alan Heppenstall and John Hodgkinson, and taking a look at the regeneration work going on in the immediate area as part of the New Wave project. Although the area around the cinema is very much work in progress, you can certainly see the shape the area is going to take. Coastal defence from flooding looks set to become increasingly important in years to come thanks to global warming, but not only will the wo

Plan B?

The Casino fightback has started. The Blackpool Gazette has launched an online petition here which I urge everyone to sign. The Casino fightback has started. The Blackpool Gazette has launched an online petition here which I urge everyone to sign. But Blackpool's future cannot just be dependent on the issue of whether or not we get a casino - it is too uncertain a path to rely on. The wider regeneration efforts must continue. ReBlackpool are right to say that the new sea wall, tramway, shopping centre and development sites put us in a good position for if we do get a casino license. On the other hand, I think that to

Blackpool Needs To Have Faith in the Future

People across Blackpool will be deeply disappointed to hear that Manchester, rather than Blackpool, has been given the go-ahead for a regional casino. It is to be hoped that if the Manchester pilot is successful, the Government will reconsider Blackpool as a suitable venue for another super-casino. It is to be hoped that if the Manchester pilot is successful, the Government will reconsider Blackpool as a suitable venue for another super-casino. There is no magic wand to Blackpool’s regeneration. The casino would not have solved all the town’s problems single-handedly, but it would have been a key element. ReBlackpool and other regenerat

John Reid's Incompetence

If anything is going to do for this Government, it will be their incompetence. The ongoing crisis in the Home Office, in which John Reid is left thrashing about, is a case in point – but let’s not forget other highlights such as the Child Support Agency, Single Farm Payments, hospital infections, the railways, the Dome … need I go on? The most amazing thing in this whole affair is that had they been governing astutely, they would have seen the problem long ago – and done something about it. RNLI SOS Day

Today is RNLI SOS Day, the day when the Royal National Lifeboat Institution has its annual fund-raising push. I am sure everyone knows there is an RNLI Station on Central Promenade, just below the Tower. Today is RNLI SOS Day, the day when the Royal National Lifeboat Institution has its annual fund-raising push. I am sure everyone knows there is an RNLI Station on Central Promenade, just below the Tower. First established in 1864, the new station was opened back in 1998. Over those intervening 143 years, countless lives have been saved from people swept out to sea in storms to fishermen caught out at sea and much more. Amongst the recent rescue efforts the crew were involved with was the tragic

Fewer Dog Handlers for Lancashire

Disappointing news to see Lancashire Constabulary's dog handling unit is being shrunk from 35 to 21 handlers. Not only that, but it means 4 'working dogs' will have to be rehomed. Disappointing news to see Lancashire Constabulary's dog handling unit is being shrunk from 35 to 21 handlers. Not only that, but it means 4 'working dogs' will have to be rehomed. As the Chairman of the local Police Federation has said, it shows how the police budgets are under pressure, meaning Lancashire Constabulary is faced with trying to balance commitments and resources. These cuts mean the police's ability to conduct searches and manage crowd control will be compromised - not good news fo
